Preparing the Base

Laying a suitable base is crucial for driveways which may be required to take a significant weight.  We believe that to provide you with a great looking and robust product the following key steps are essential.

The first step is to dig the soil out to a depth of at least 8inches followed by application of weedkiller and an impermeable membrane to prevent the return of weeds in the future.

Next we will then lay up to 6inches of Type 1 crushed material such as granite or limestone which we will then compact to make an extremely solid and hard wearing base for the slabs.

The paving slabs are then laid on a mortar bed and tamped down leaving sufficient joint spacing with the the slabs “level” to the fall.  When hardened, the joints are pointed; in some cases additional steps may be needed to provide a solid base to take the weight of one or more vehicles.

The same steps are followed whether using slabs or block paving.
